Gatsby has always been a mystery to every character in “The Great Gatsby” by Scott Fitzgerald. He tells everyone his name is Jay Gatsby when in reality it is James Gatz, he lies to the other characters about his job, and he parties every night for unknown reasons. Gatsby is a self-sufficient and committed man in every way. It is a no brainer that Gatsby is self-sufficient in every way of the word. He is a very rich man and no matter how he got the money, it shows that he had to go through a lot to get it. Nick describes the outside of his house by saying, “...more than 40 acres of lawn and garden. It was Gatsby’s mansion…”(5). He gets whatever he wants when he wants it and does not let anything get in his way when he goes after it. He has a specific schedule for each of his days to improve himself. His dad showed the the schedule that read, “GENERAL RESOLVES: Save $5.00 [crossed out] $3.00 per week; Be better to parents”(173). Even as a boy he would do whatever it took to get ahead of everyone else and better himself as a person. He also waited five whole years to get another shot at being with Daisy and did not so much as think of being with any other girl. He threw hundreds of parties just for a chance of he coming to one of them so that he could rekindle the flames that they once had for one another. He even tells Jordan to tell Nick to, “...invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over”(78).
