Dawson Schroeder Ms. Smith Honors English III April 14, 2023 Great Gatsby Compare F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby is read in schools all over the world. As his novel’s popularity has grown, movies about the novel have also been produced. While the movies tend to reflect the themes and ideas of the novel with accuracy, the movies often have very different details throughout. From Gatsby’s life to the small details, and the scenes in the stories, the differences between the 2013 movie and Fitzgerald’s novel create different perceptions from the audience on the characters and ideas of the story. One of the first differences in the details happens in the movie during the party in the New York apartment, at the party, Catherine, Myrtle’s sister, uses drugs to enjoy the night, whereas, in the novel, they only use alcohol. This is an important detail because it shows the story's modernization to better fit today's audiences. The next detailed difference is at Gatsby’s party, the music that the partygoers are dancing to is much more modern than the jazz that is played in the novel. This is another example of the director’s attempt to make the 2013 movie resonate with modern audiences. A third difference in the details is when Nick meets Meyer Wolfsheim. In the novel, Wolfsheim has human molar cufflinks, however, in the movie he has a human molar tie pin. There are no significant implications by the use of a tie pin instead of cuff links but it is still an important detail. A final detail difference between the novel and the movie is in the scene where Gatsby first sees Daisy again. In the novel, Gatsby bumps into and knocks a broken clock off Nick’s mantle. In the movie, the clock is not broken, this is important because the clock represents the frozen time between when Gatsby and Daisy last met.
