America in the 1920’s was an era of dramatic social, economic and political change. People were richer than ever with all types of new technology. Many Americans owned cars, radios, and telephones for the first time. There were problems with people having everything they could possibly want, people were dissatisfied and disillusioned. Once people had everything in life then they had nothing to look forward to.

Background (time, place, story):
The Great Gatsby follows Nick Carraway and his relations with Jay Gatsby on West Egg, New York. The story was set in the roaring twenties where people's spirits were high and their ambition knew no bounds. Americans' average wealth was skyrocketing and even though America …show more content…

After World War one, “Everything seemed meaningless and unimportant” for most people. Due to this, they would “Toss off a few drinks and get a kick out of physical passion” so they could “forget the world was crumbling”. These people were so disillusioned with how the world had become and were partying non-stop, so they lost their manners and only showed up at parties for fun and not for formalities like they did before the war. (Doc A).

Argument (Connecting evidence to thesis):
People were dissatisfied with how the world changed so they used drinking and physical passion as an escape from their disillusionment. Due to the prohibition during the 1920’s people were forced to go to parties instead of being able to drink alone. This caused the culture and standard for parties to be obnoxious and full of booze because people were only concerned with having fun and drinking enough to forget.
