Directed by Jack Clayton, The Great Gatsby (1974) tells the story of Jay Gatsby (Robert Redford), who is a self-made millionaire, who uses his immense fortune to buy his way into society and win back his true love, Daisy Bunchana (Mia Farrow) who is married to Tom Buchanan (Bruce Bern). The film is narrated by Nick Carraway (Sam Waterson), a young man from the Midwest renting a cottage among the finest mansions in Long Island, who is drawn into the social life of his wealthy, mysterious neighbor, Jay Gatsby, where Nick becomes a witness to obsession and tragedy. Nick is invited to Gatsby’s party, while there he hears rumors about who Gatsby is and that he does not attend his own parties. While at the party Nick is told to follow a man, leading to Jay Gatsby who invites Nick to lunch the next day where he offers Nick to work for him. Nick receives an invitation for Daisy to have tea with Gatsby. Nick and Daisy attend the Gatsby residence, revealing the love Daisy and Gatsby once shared and how Gatsby’s lack of money drove Daisy away. Tom, Daisy, and Nick are invited to Gatsby’s party to find it was thrown for Gatsby to see Daisy. With the help of Gatsby Tom leaves to flirt with other women, to allow Daisy and Gatsby to run off. Tom becomes furious with Daisy’s actions and demands to know everything about Gatsby. Daisy and Gatsby grow closer, spending more time together, when Gatsby reveals his love for Daisy and demands her to leave Tom.
