In the Novel “The Great Gatsby” written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, almost all of the characters have a very dark side to them. In Fact it could be said that none of the characters in the story should be liked by any reader and that none of them are truly honest individuals. This includes the protagonist of the story Jay Gatsby, but it doesn’t mean that he is wicked like Tom and Daisy. Gatsby is a “great” person because he: has become wealthy even though he was born to poor parents, believes that he can achieve the “American Dream”, and has many great personality traits and positive habits. Gatsby is “great” because he was born to very poor parents but managed to become very wealthy. Any person that can do this is a great person because they are able to flip their reality from “rags to riches”. One of the first things that Nick learns about Gatsby is that he does not drink alcohol at his own parties. Not drinking alcohol not only allows him to stay in full control in case things get out of hand, but also helps him keep a better image of himself and most importantly being ready if Daisy ever shows up to his parties. He also has an interesting way of talking to people as he mostly calls men by “Old sport” which is his way of implying that the person who he is talking to is like a good friend of his. Gatsby displays many acts of kindness throughout the book and is always respectful to everybody. This helps him attract instant respect from whoever he is talking to. He even asks for favors in a kind manner as he lets Nick know by saying that: “I don’t want to put you to any trouble, you see,” (p. 87).
