F. Scott Fitzgerald 1925 novel The Great Gatsby, which addresses topics including the American Dream, social class, and the corrupting power of money, was written and published. The book is still relevant in many respects, even though it was written almost a century ago. The primary reason why schools and companies use this book is that it is a timeless story where the themes still apply to today's society.
The idea of the American Dream is still applicable today, to start with. Even though the practicalities of realizing this ambition have grown increasingly challenging, it is still a commonly held conviction in American society that everyone can succeed and prosper through diligence, willpower, and hard work. Many individuals still find Jay Gatsby's character to be current and approachable, since he personifies the American Dream. ¨ He stretched out his arms towards the dark water…-and distinguishing nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock (chapter 1)¨. Gatsby's American Dream is the lost love of Daisy. We learn throughout the book that the corruption of wealth and money got to him and destroyed his chances at achieving the American dream.
