This love is displayed in Jay Gatsby, the main character of the book, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. As Gatsby’s character is further developed, the realization of him being attached, abstracted, and retrospective comes into light.
Gatsby in the beginning of the story is the ideal for all those who know him. He is rich, throws extravagant parties, and is an influential person. Unknown to the others, though, Jay Gatsby is quite anti-social with those around him. At his own parties, he will overwatch, but never join in. He hides this though through his wealth, fooling those around him that he is happy.

Gatsby throws these parties in attempt to impress his former lover Daisy Buchanan, whether one day she’ll set foot into one of the infamous parties, see the bright lights from across the bay, or hear about the massive parties thrown by a mystery man named Gatsby. He became incredibly wealthy in a such short amount of time, it threw suspicion towards him, especially in a time of bootlegging and gangsters. “It was testimony to the romantic speculation he inspired that there were whispers about him from those who felt little that it was necessary to whisper about in this world.” (44). Rumors about Gatsby float around his parties, whispered from ear to ear by people who normally have no qualms about judging people to their face.
The Great Gatsby Novel and Films Novels and movies are very different but work together rather well. A movie shows the story and the novel tells it. The Great Gatsby novel goes more in-depth and helps the reader see the rhetorical purpose that F. Scott Fitzgerald wanted to get through. F. Scott Fitzgerald used many rhetorical strategies in The Great Gatsby to get his readers to understand the purpose of this novel, He used Imagery, metaphors, similes, personification, and more. The 1974 film The Great Gatsby did not really capture as much as the novel, it was rather strange and had many random things, and it was more out of order compared to the novel.
Although many people attended his parties and took great advantage of his wealth and generosity, people still threw around incriminating allegations regarding him. One example of this would be at the first party Nick, Mr. Gatsby’s friend, who attended a girl in a yellow dress said, “Someone told me they thought he killed a man once.” Now if people were willing to openly discuss this to new acquaintances, this obviously must’ve been known by Jay Gatsby himself. There were also accusations of him being a German spy on page 30. Which at that time was a very serious accusation considering World War 1 had recently happened and there was a big push to erase anything German.
