During the 1920’s, many people were power-hungry. They all wanted to be at the top and be the richest of the rich and be able to buy whatever they want. The 1920’s was a time where people were able to go from rags to riches, industries were growing and making money, and it was also the era of the Prohibition, a law that banned alcohol. “The Great Gatsby” was able to reflect on noticeable and non-noticeable aspects of the 1920’s. It reflects on the postwar disillusionment, the rise of the nouveau riche, and how business became the new religion for the United States.
The thematic concept I am choosing that relates to me in a way for this final writing assignment for The Great Gatsby is visions of America. This relates to me because i want to do something when I am older, make money, own a big house with a nice car, have a family. Like Nick, it it isn’t going to be easy to become rich. He was poor while in west egg lived in a small house. Nick was trying to succeed the American dream, he was reading books on how to do his job the best he could.
I. Introduction: The dream of having Money, a nice car, big house, nice clothes, and a happy life all symbolizes the American dream, but all this causes destruction. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, he validates his theme of the fatalness of the American Dream through the use of a green light to symbolize Gatsby’s goals and dreams of having a happy life with the love of his life, Daisy, through Myrtle to show how the American Dream causes destruction, and the hope for happiness can destroy happiness. Jay Gatsby ,born as Jay Gatz, was born in the Midwest in 1892. Gatz was not born into a rich family, his father made a success by farming as his profession. In order for Gatz to have a life full of luxury and money he chose to work as a clam digger and salmon fisher on Lake Superior. Jay Gatz also attends Lutheran college of St. Olaf, and since the little funds he did have wouldn’t cover the costs, he had to become a janitor in order to pay the college, which only lasted two weeks. The 17 year old Gatz would soon meet Dan Cody, an older wealthy man at Lake Superior and at that moment Jay Gatz changes his name to Jay Gatsby.

This period of time was one of innovation and celebration. People lived a fast paced and glamourous life with new freedoms and a new culture.
