The 1920's was a decade of rapid change, earning itself the nickname of the Roaring Twenties. The American Dream thrived in this bodacious era. It was constituted of a person's desire and vision of all they want from life, whether it be love, money, happiness, or other examples of success. The Great Gatsby is a book written by F. Scott Fitzgerald; it is centered entirely around individual American Dreams, particularly a man by the name of Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby is a mysterious bootlegger with a shady past built up on rumors and lies. He's spent five years earning his illegally obtained riches in order to impress and win the heart of Daisy, his American Dream. His own definition of the American Dream is obtaining the perfect girl, and being able to properly care and provide for her. …show more content…

Gatsby spends all of his time thinking only of her, and how he can get close to her once again. A good example from the novel is when Gatsby is telling Nick about his first kiss with Daisy. Nick claimed that "Gatsby knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God." This quote means that Gatsby would sacrifice his current American Dream of riches and luxury, and his dream would become entirely about Daisy.
