Love is the feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection. In the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there are many romantic relationships between characters that often do not have a fairytale ending, some only for the looks. The Great Gatsby is narrated by Nick Caraway, who seems to be the middleman in all of the upset and misfortune throughout the novel. Gatsby is a neighbor of Nick who lives in a lavish mansion known for his extravagant parties, in which everyone enjoys attending. In chapter four, Jordan tells Nick that it is no coincidence that Gatsby bought a house across the bay from Daisy (Fitzgerald 78). This shows that their relationship was never based on a romantic connection but an ego builder to live a wealthy life. Through the entire five years that Daisy and Gatsby had not spoken, every achievement that he set out to achieve, was done for the sake of winning over Daisy. Daisy had completely forgotten about Gatsby over the years, she lived a happy life with Tom, had a beautiful daughter and still never confessed how she truly felt for Gatsby until she toured his house. Tom’s got some woman in New York. The affair was not just a one night stand, it was a hidden relationship that bloomed way before Gatsby and Daisy rekindled their past. Gatsby came from a low income family living in the Midwest. He became extremely wealthy after taking an interest in Bootlegging because he wanted to prove that he could be successful and change his social status, despite his rough upbringing. Daisy was attracted to wealth more than the personalities and traits of Gatsby and Tom when she had to choose who could give her what she wanted at the time. It could be agreeable to say that both Daisy and Tom, Gatsby and Daisy loved each other, but it wasn’t for the right reasons, it was for their own benefit. There were a lot of situations where the characters showed great amounts of determination to better themselves, which overpowered the love they did not have for each other and the personal gain they achieved.
