Albert Bai English 2 3/29/2024 The story of Gatsby's success and failures showed the fallacy of the American Dream, which is the idea that anyone can move up the ladder of American society if they work hard enough, regardless of their background and status. The portrayal of Gatsby's empty pursuit of the American Dream mirrors the current phenomenon of social media influencers who usually show their audience an idealized version of happiness and success that may not show the harsh realities and challenges in real life. Gatsby himself is the embodiment of the fallacy of the American dream. Gatsby fails to grasp that his origins matter; his wealth ultimately can not hide the real Gatsby. Gatsby had imagined Daisy as perfect as possible, "High in a white palace, the king's daughter, the golden girl" (92). Daisy represents every aspect of the American dream: wealth, social status, and privilege. Gatsby hosted numerous parties to lure Daisy in. However, despite Gatsby's persistent pursuit of his goal, represented by his desire to relive the past and reclaim Daisy, he is ultimately foiled by the unstoppable march of time and today's reality; as Nick had told Gatsby, "You cannot repeat the past." "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." 138. However, the image of these boats being "borne back ceaselessly into the past" suggests that despite their efforts, they cannot move forward and escape the influence of the
