The novel The Great Gatsby by Scott F. Fitzgerald can be interpreted in many ways. The story could be considered a love story or as people would describe, “The American Dream”. The Great Gatsby can be seen as “The American Dream” by the self-made rich Gatsby who went from not having anything to years later living in West Egg in a big mansion where he hosts parties every weekend. Nick Carraway narrates the story. Throughout the story, we see how each character in The Great Gatsby is different. In the story, we find out that Gatsby has an old romantic past with Daisy, who is Nick’s cousin. In “The Great Gatsby” Gatsby chased down wealth as a solution to get back his old lover, Daisy, whom he lost five years prior. Gatsby and Daisy had a relationship before Gatsby had to leave to fight in the war. Once Gatsby came back from the war, he discovers that Daisy had already been married to Tom Buchanan. Before Daisy officially married Tom, Daisy read a letter Gatsby wrote to her and as she read that letter she started to change her mind about marrying Tom, “Tell ‘em all Daisy’s change’ her mine. Gatsby chased down wealth so he could win back Daisy, and he did exactly that. He ended up buying a mansion in West Egg, right across the bay from where Daisy lived. Gatsby wanted to see Daisy again so he asked Jordan, Daisy’s friend, to ask Nick if he could invite Daisy over for tea so Gatsby would be able to see her again. “She’s not to know about it. Gatsby doesn’t want her to know. You’re just supposed to invite her to tea” (Fritzgerald 51). This is one of many actions that Gatsby has taken to try to get Daisy back. Gatsby wants Nick to invite Daisy without her knowing so he can come by and invite her to see his mansion and just simply see her again. Gatsby achieved “The American Dream” but his motivation for it failed him in the end. In chapter 7, Gatsby, Nick, Daisy, Tom, and Jordan went to the city. Gatsby was trying to get Daisy to tell Tom that she didn’t love him. Once all that happens Daisy was in distress so her and Gatsby go back to West Egg.
