Love is profound, intense, and can be very deep and thorough, but to what extent does love become an obsession? Jay Gatsby, a very wealthy man, is shown to be interested in a woman, Daisy Buchanan, but what is it that he feels for her? Is what Gatsby feels about Daisy love, obsession, affection, or accumulation/objectification? The novel answers this question for us, and we learn that Gatsby feels both love and obsession with Daisy. To start, Gatsby loves Daisy, we see this prominently in their younger lives together during Gatsby’s time in the army. On the other hand, Gatsby is obsessed with Daisy as she has now become a central part of his life, along with obsessing over the idea of her. …show more content…

Gatsby is in love with Daisy and is still in love with her. There are many moments where we see Daisy and Gatsby in love, especially in their younger days. According to the novel Fitzgerald states, “The officer looked at Daisy while she was speaking, in a way that every young girl wants to be looked at some time, and because it seemed romantic to me I have remembered the incident ever since. His name was Jay Gatsby.” (Fitzgerald, 48). According to the quote, even Jordan Baker could tell that Gatsby was, at the very least, romantically interested in Daisy. The way he looked at her points to the fact that Gatsby did love Daisy, and it was genuine enough that Jordan said it was in a way that “every young girl wants to be looked at some time”. Another scene in the novel where we see Gatsby in love with Daisy is when we find out why he bought his house. In the novel it states, “Gatsby bought the house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (Fitzgerald, 50).
