Nick rides with Jordan and Tom in Gatsby’s car, while Gatsby and Daisy ride together in Tom’s car. As the get gas for the car, Tom and Nick learn the Mr. Wilson is aware that his wife is cheating on him and plans to move out west. As the get to NYC, they decide to book a suite at the Plaza Hotel, where Tom confronts gatsby about his
The reunion of Daisy and Gatsby sets all the following events into inevitable motion. Chapter seven reveals that the story of their romance reaches its climax and its tragic conclusion. The fact that Daisy invites Gatsby to her house, considering the fact that Tom is also there, was a very foolish move. The confrontation between Gatsby and Tom serves to reveal the major flaws and motivations of both characters. Tom’s conceitedness causes him to believe that his wife will never leave him because of his wealth and high social status.
In the beginning, Daisy finds out that Tom, her husband, is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson. Daisy is gradually drifting away from Tom and into Gatsby’s arms. During Tom’s transition, he is having a lack of who he wants, Daisy and Myrtle. His lust for Daisy’s attention and affection becomes obvious when their group travels downtown. First, Tom tries to impress Daisy when Tom asks to switch cars with Gatsby: ‘“Well, you take my coupé and let me drive your car to town’”
During the 1920’s, many people were power-hungry. They all wanted to be at the top and be the richest of the rich and be able to buy whatever they want. The 1920’s was a time where people were able to go from rags to riches, industries were growing and making money, and it was also the era of the Prohibition, a law that banned alcohol. “The Great Gatsby” was able to reflect on noticeable and non-noticeable aspects of the 1920’s. It reflects on the postwar disillusionment, the rise of the nouveau riche, and how business became the new religion for the United States.
There are many reasons why a person would want to pretend like someone they are not. It could be for shame, fear, or pride, it could be for any reason. However, the real question is, is this worth it? The novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald deeply critiques the masks people put on during the 1920s just for the sole purpose of fitting in to society, which mostly consists of wealthy people. With this, comes the superficiality of them and the situation they are in.
“The Great Gatsby” is a novel narrated by Nick Carraway, who moved into a Long Island neighborhood next door to Jay Gatsby. Carraway is reluctantly drawn into Gatsby’s quest for the hand of Daisy Buchanan. In order to win Daisy back from her current husband, Tom Buchanan, Gatsby reinvents himself into what he thought Daisy desired. As a part of changing his life, Gatsby earns an entire fortune through various unknown methods. The novel comes to a close when Myrtle Wilson is involved in a collision with Gatsby and Daisy in which she dies.
Gatsby cannot handle the fact that he does not hold complete control over Daisy, and this leads him to envy her and Tom’s relationship. The same can be said for Myrtle Wilson. In the affair, the spirit of Daisy hangs over her constantly. It is clear that she one day wishes to marry Tom, but Daisy stands between them. This leads to a quarrel between her and Tom; “‘Daisy!
“Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone....just remember that all the people in the world haven’t the advantages that you’ve had.” This quote is from Nick who quoted this from his father. "Gatsby turned out alright..." This shows Nick’s actions and thoughts still remain the same about judgement at the end of story. I think F. Scott Fitzgerald uses this quote also to foreshadow the bad choices that take place and to reserve our judgment and try to understand the characters with a open mind.
The American Dream comes and goes throughout everyone’s lives in America. But for some, it shows a spark of hope of a dream that will allow them to succeed in life. Whether it is something that people want to have in their lives or having a goal in their mind, it is what allows people to continue pushing through life and doing everything to get what they want. The American Dream creates a vision of what people want in their future but, if this “vision” fails, many people would either give up or find a new dream. There are many reasons why people give up on their dreams, but some, they believe that it is out of their control to accomplish their dreams such as the main characters in The Great Gatsby.
There, conflict arises between Tom and Gatsby, and their world of fantasy becomes a world of rivalry and strife. In the midst of conflict, Myrtle Wilson is struck and killed by an oncoming vehicle. Nick later learns this vehicle to have been driven by Daisy; however, Gatsby shoulders the blame. Nick’s morality is tried one last time, as he must decide whether or not to let Gatsby take the blame for such a horrible incident. Nick ultimately decides to leave Gatsby despite the previous knowledge he acquired.
On the way home from the hotel, Daisy, driving Gatsby's car, hits Tom's mistress, Myrtle. Gatsby says he'll take the blame for the death of Myrtle, therefore Daisy doesn't have to be arrested. Tom finds out and tells George Wilson, the husband of Myrtle. Enraged with the death of his wife, George shoots Gatsby in the pool. In the next chapter, Tom tells Nick one day passing by, "'That fellow had it coming to him.
Tom sends Gatsby and Daisy home. Daisy ends up being the one to drive and her emotion are all over the place. She ends up hitting Myrtle Wilson with Gatsby’s yellow car and drives off. She doesn’t bother to stop to see if she's dead or anything. When Tom, Jordan and Nick drive by they notice the big crowd and find out what happened.
Gatsby’s fantasy is surely lost at this moment, although only Nick is aware. At the end of chapter seven, Myrtle dies and Nick comes across Gatsby, who is outside the Buchanan’s house because he is afraid Tom will abuse Daisy. Nick observes most people would think Tom and Daisy were “conspiring together” and that
We all know the movie Mean Girls, a 2000 teen movie, that starts like a typical “popular girls vs main characters” movie. But at the very end we all learn that stereotyping and being mean to people that are different to you, is no good for anyone. My team and I tried to recreate the scene from “mean girls” in which a girl is asked why is she white if she's from africa, and then the mean girls explain the “type” of persons that the school has. We recreated it with a school, and the new girl was a white Mexican girl. We did not really needed to change the scene so much because this is already a real problem in the world.
A lot of people today get caught up in the past. They allow the memories to consume their minds, preventing them from moving on, living their lives. In the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby, and others, are stuck in their pasts - and it is preventing them from making real friends, second chances at love, and living their lives to the fullest - happy, and with purpose. Nick, along with others, had a hard time believing Gatsby about anything concerning his past.
