The Great Gatsby
“‘Hello!” I interrupted breathlessly. “Look here– this isn’t Mr. Gatsby. Mr.Gatsby’s dead.” There was a long silence on the other end of the wire followed by an exclamation… then a quick squawk as the connection was broken”(Fitzgerald 175). Jay Gatsby is a fictional character in the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Gatsby was a filthy rich man who was always surrounded by hundreds of wealthy admirers. At the end of this novel Gatsby is shot and killed. The unexpected death of Gatsby reveals each character's true relationship with him. It shows who Gatsby's true friends were all along, or more evidently who his fake friends were. The ending of The Great Gatsby is not a satisfying ending although it appropriately concludes this novel.

After Gatsby's death Nick takes planning his friend's funeral into his own hands, “but all this part of it seemed remote and unessential. I found myself on Gatsby’s side, and alone”(Fitzgerald 172). After Gatsby was no longer throwing parties and handing out grand gifts, the people that once surrounded him lost all interest. The majority of people that swamped him at his parties no longer cared for him. Nobody felt obligated to give Gatsby their remorse and respect. There were only a couple people that showed up at Gatsby's funeral, including Nick, while there had been hundreds at his parties.
