SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TITLE The title is significant because of how Gatsby is perceived by all the guests at his parties. He is famous in his town because of his wealth, and everyone knows who he is, so in a way, he is “great.” In a different view, the usage of the word “great” in the title is ironic; he is not exactly an exceptional or inspiring man. This is because Gatsby made his fortune in a dishonest way by being involved in shady affairs. He is a fake or a phony, and when he dies he doesn’t have any real friends because they just wanted to take advantage of his wealth. There is a final way the title is important and that is in Nick’s view of Gatsby.
