What is the American dream? The american dream to me is that hard work can lead one from rags to riches. In other words if you work hard for what you want, you will get it. Google’s definition of the american dream is “ the set of ideals (Democracy, Rights, Liberty, Opportunity, and Equality) in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility for the family and children, achieved through hard work in a society with few barriers.” I was told to discuss and analyze Fitzgerald’s point of view of the American Dream, and if Gatsby is the Ultimate champion of the dream, or if he is the victim of it. To me honestly i feel like gatsby is the victim of The American Dream. All he been wanting his whole life was to be with Daisy. Even though Daisy loves Gatsby, she still married Tom. She wanted to live a pleasant lifestyle, so she chose Tom for stability , because he was very rich, and at the time gatsby didn’t really have anything because his parents didn’t have a lot of money or rich. Daisy will never choose Gatsby over Tom it would be like her embarrassing herself. From the day that Gatsby had left for World War I, he had his heart set on marrying Daisy when he arrives back. When he returned, he built up his million dollar fortune, and expected that he would soon be with daisy, because he now had money to be able to take care of her and give her what she needs.Gatsby tries to convince Nick that him and Daisy will be together again shortly .” I’m going to fix everything just the way it was before.” (page 110). So clearly Gatsby’s dream in to recreate the love that he had with Daisy before he left for War. Gatsby creates an illusion for himself which leads to his downfall. Gatsby believed he could win Daisy back with all the money he had, he really thought everything was going to go perfectly, but at the end Daisy still rejected him. Daisy knew Gatsby wasn’t born rich, but Tom was and daisy didn’t want to risk not having money like in case Gatsby goes out broke, so she rejected him. No matter how much Gatsby runs and tries to hide the fact that he didn’t always have it, but the facts remains he will never be like Tom Buchanan. This is what made Gatsby the victim of the American
