One major difference between the film and the novel is the existence of the Mental Hospital. In the movie the narrator Nick Caraway is hospitalized due to mental strain and alcoholism. This may have been a shock to novel readers but not a surprise. Although, the hospital does support the overall theme of the book because it shows the audience the power of “old money” and what it can do to an individual. Nick’s exposure to the corruptness of the East could serve as a reason to why he would need professional help dealing with the events that went on.
