Everybody has a dream whether they want to or not. No matter how big or small, there will always be a dream. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald there is a man named Gatsby who wants to complete the great American Dream everyone strives for, which is to be successful with no worries. For Gatsby to complete the dream, he wants to get the girl he has been longing for. He uses a glowing green light at the end of the girl’s dock to symbolize this dream of his. In the last chapter of the novel Nick informs the reader that the story is being told from two years after Gatsby’s unfortunate death. Coincidentally, Gatsby’s death occurs soon after he feels his American Dream has been completed. The last chapter of the book happens to be Nick’s last night in Long Island, and on the very last page as he is staring off at the green light he shares “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us”(Fitzgerald 206). This reveals to the reader that even after Buchanan's moving and Gatsby’s death, the green light sticks around and continues to glow. In this Nick explains Gatsby’s strength of hope and desire through the green light. His amount of hope was just as strong as how much light the green light beamed out through the mist. By describing the future as orgastic just further adds to Gatsby’s drive, passion, and anticipation for the future.
