The truth can hurt for awhile, but a lie hurts forever. This erstwhile story, begins with Hester Prynne, who has been found guilty of adultery, is being punished in front of a large group of Puritans. Hester is forced to wear a scarlet A on the chest of her dress which is her punishment for her affair and keeping the father of her newborn daughter, Pearl, a secret. Hester’s missing husband then shows up to the town and calls himself Roger Chillingworth. The dispute between Hester, Pearl, Roger and Pearl’s father causes tension in the town of Boston throughout the story. Secrecy and concealment of sins of the characters later turn into revelation and pain. Hester Prynne was sent to Boston by her husband. Hester’s husband never arrived in the new world and was thought to be lost at sea and dead. While waiting several years for her previous lover to turn up, Hester had slept with another man and created life. Hester’s newborn baby girl was named Pearl. Attempts were made to have Pearl taken away from Hester, but those attempts were stopped by a minister who goes by the name of Arthur Dimmesdale.
