Nicolas hit the ground running. Once again, he stole a loaf of bread from the baker. “I haven’t eaten in days, this is just what I needed” he thought to himself. As he sprinted across the soft dirt road, he could see the angry faces of townspeople flash by. Everything inside of his head was spinning. Hunger and weariness were overtaking him, and he didn’t feel as if he was thinking clearly. “Just keep running, and thou shalt have bread to eat,” he repeatedly mumbled to himself.
After nearly running into some playing children, he finally made it to the bridge under which he took shelter. He sat his skinny body down on the cool sand and laid his back against the hard, rough stones that made his home. “I am truly sorry for the poor baker,” Nicolas spoke with honesty, “but if I do not eat, then I will not live.” Feeling starved from hunger, he took a bite of the crumbly bread. His mother was taken from the plague, along with the rest of his family. Nicolas slipped the heavenly bread into the pocket of his worn out clothing. Out from another pocket, he pulled a smooth green gem. It was very small, but it meant the world to him. His mother had given it to him one day was he was a small boy. She told him that if he had it with him, everything would be alright. Nicolas loved his mother deeply and tried his best to believe her, but in his heart he knew that nothing was alright. After his family had died, he was kicked out of the small brick home that he spent every night in. Hopeless, he spent many nights on the cold, firm ground, shivering as the night went on drearily. He spent many days begging for food, but nobody cared enough to give him a single crumb. After years of begging, he learned to steal. His skills of trickery grew until he became a disliked scoundrel.
