There were 110 men willing to risk everything they had to have a new lease on life. These men were headed to Jamestown, the first permanent settlement. By the end of December only 40 settlers would survive. So, why did so many colonist die?
Early Jamestown: Why Did Some Many Colonist Die? In the year of 1607, three ships sailed to a newly discovered land with over one hundred British colonists, but they had no idea what was in store(B.E.). Within a year of their journey, half the men died, but why?
The colonists that came to North America were ill-prepared in a number of ways, and they had to adapt their original expectations after they arrived. The combination of issues with labor, commerce, government, and Native Americans created a uniquely American identity. One main problem was the amount of energy needed to develop the new colonies. The development projects, such as deforestation, planting the fields, and harvesting them, required a vast amount of workers, and there simply weren’t enough workers to do the job. Different areas dealt with the shortage differently.
The English colonists on Roanoke Island lived in homes near native villages, but after vanishing without a trace, they are now called the Lost Colony. When John White finally returned to Roanoke Island in 1590, the English colony had vanished, and he allegedly found the words 'CRO ' and 'CROATOAN ' carved on two trees. When White saw that, he thought that the colonists got help from the Croatan Indians on Hatteras Island. The Croatans were peaceful and friendly with the settlers, so the English could have a good relationship with them when the colony was established in 1587. There are many theories about what happened to them: one of them is that they managed to integrate themselves with the Croatan people.
As the colonists live in Jamestown, they question their survival. In 1607, they landed on Chesapeak Bay and built a colony called Jamestown. They had their hearts set on land and gold. But they didn’t get what they hoped for. The years they have lived in North America have not been easy.
Back in the early 1600s Europeans were traveling to the New World for many reasons, such may be for profit, like planting tobacco, those would be the colonist who would settle in Virginia. The people of the Plymouth Plantation came to the colonies, because of their children losing touch with their British roots while living in Holland. " We were all ignorant, and supposing to make our passage in two months, with victual to live. "(Smith 3) Everyone who traveled to the New World faced hardships that were very difficult to endure, but it was "God's will". These two different colonies faced hardships, similar yet also different.

Their report to the home office was so satisfactory and favorable, that the Society was encouraged to continue on its mission. Because of the pressure exerted by the southern slaveholders, the federal government soon gave support to the American Colonization Society, and Congress decided that the proposed colony must be in Africa, and not in the United States.
As with all expeditions to the New World the reasons vary. Some came from across the sea in the hopes of finding riches or glory, others came to spread religion or to follow their own religion without proscoucation. Whatever the reason, all those who eventually made it through the first few years had something in common, support and numbers. Support came in many ways, supplies, food, money, help from the Natives or help from home. Although important, it was not what would ultimately make or break a settlement, instead it was numbers and manpower.
Hardship shapes people, it changes them drastically. It’s as if they go through metamorphosis, they are completely different; things like their religion can easily be affected by this. When human beings are stripped of what makes them human, they have little left.
The settlers that made the journey endured harsh conditions and many challenges, but ultimately persevered which made it possible for them to gain control of the territory and create a New World. Many of the colonists were Puritans who desired to purify
What are some of the hardships Americans in the early 1800s faced when traveling? One hardship they faced was having their entire food supply exhausted. Most of the families had to kill their oxen for food and leave their wagons, which resulted in the travelers walking on foot. Unfortunately, a lot of the people ended up dying of starvation anyway. Another hardship they faced was not being able to bury those that had died in coffins.
Colonist had their reasons for coming over to the New World. For many it was for economic growth, religious freedoms, or escaping the political and social systems of their native lands. They enjoyed their freedoms and liberties as new societies while being developed, but it was not an easy accomplishment. The colonist worked hard on developing their towns on their beliefs and values far from the reach of England. As time went on, there was growing tension between the thirteen American colonies and England, their motherland.
Starting over in a new unknown world can be terrifying. The Jamestown colonists had hard trials, some survived these trials, some weren 't so lucky. Poor planning, Indian attacks and lack of medical care are the three main reasons the so many colonists died during the early years of their settlement in the new world. The colonists were not prepared for their new beginning.
Jamestown colony and Plymouth colony have are two similar colonies but at the same time are so very different. One similarity is that each colony had a large number of deaths after winter. One difference is that Plymouth colony had a good relationship with the Native Americans and Jamestown didn't have a good relationships with them. A second difference is that the two colonies came for different reasons.
