The immediate cause of World War I was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand at Sarajevo. However a number of factors contributed to the rivalry between the Great powers that allowed war to break out. Main causes for World War I were Militarism, Imperialism, and Nationalism. These three main causes were just the starters, but the Archduke’s assassination made Austria-Hungary declare war.
