Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.’ “The Hate U Give”, by Angie Thomas, is a story about a young 16 year old girl named Starr Carter, who has to cope with the death of her best friend Khalil, while trying to balance her life in the poor black neighbourhood of Garden Heights where she is a resident of, as well as the rich fancy Williamson Prep that she attends. As the sole witness to the murder she feels targeted and conflicted about what she should do, eventually she meets April Ofrah from Just Us for Justice, and decides to share the information with the public, even though they lose the case, people become more aware …show more content…

Starr Carter is a vivid victim of understanding how the unfair the police system can be, even at a young age, she was told to be aware of the police, she states, “When I was twelve, my parents had two talks with me. One was the usual birds and bees...The other talk was about what to do if a cop stopped me.” (20). This shows how the justice system is unfair and needs change. As the story progresses, Starr understands that she needs to do something to change how she feels and a part of that includes activism. When she figures out this out, she feels more confident instead of being griefful and she states, “‘Everybody wants to talk about how Khalil died,’ I say. ‘But this isn’t about how Khalil died. It’s about the fact that he lived. His life mattered. Khalil lived!’ I look at the cops again. ‘You hear me? Khalil lived!’” (412). At this moment she realizes that going against the police is going to help her community since they will start to understand where she is coming from.
