The book and movie have two different stories too. The difference is when Starr and Hailey gets into a fight/argument on how Hailey been making racist comment in her past and make comments about Khalil calling him and thug and drug dealer so Starr gets mad and they fight and then Starr and Hailey brothers get into a fight and it has to get broken up but in the movie it does not display as a fight at all its displays Starr pulling out a hairbrush scaring Hailey and what i think Starr point was getting out was showing its how the police think the brush that Khalil had was and gun when he got killed Starr used the hairbrush as a weapon to prove this is what police thinks a gun look like to us coming from the neighborhood her and Khalil come from the ‘Garden Heights’ she then use it more pressuring her in her face after Hailey was making the comments about Khalil. I think the change adding this to the movie was good to show Starr doesn't have to always pretend to be someone she is not in front of other people and she lets them get a feel of Garden Heights Starr and she will stand up for her friend no matter
