Can a Baby Destroy One’s Life? The hate you give little infants indeed f*cks everybody. The term as well as title of the book The Hate U Give portrays this system that is built on the foundations of hatred, designed against black people, the oppressed, the minorities. The environment, where the main characters grew up, is the story of Starr Carter, a 16-year-old girl living in Garden Heights, a mainly colored community. One night while driving home from a party, she witnessed her friend’s Khalil murder by a police officer, before leaving his last breath he and Starr talked about THUG LIFE and how deep this ideology is rooted in their society. The Garden Heights community is an example of this unbreakable circle of racial injustice and unfair treatment against minorities. The residents there experience lack basic resources, opportunities and are everyday witnesses of this unfair system, the THUG LIFE system. DeVante’s story is also an example of how hard this system is to get out of. The Carter family helped him by taking him to Uncle’s Carlos' house so that he could escape the King Lords and the gang life. DeVante was a victim of the system, his brother sold drugs and he thought that selling drugs and being in a gang was all he could do, but when he saw what Maverick had done, how he was able to escape the King Lords, he got inspired and although it was rough and the King Lords hurted him, he was able to move on. Tupac Shakur wrote a poem called The Rose That Grew From Concrete. This poem was a metaphor for the fact that even if you grew up in difficult circumstances, you can achieve something in your life. That is true in the book and in real life, too. As Starr says in her epilogue, Khalil might have not made it, but her family, DeVante, and a lot of other people in her community will. She is optimistic that life will be better and the THUG LIFE system will end. It is one of the most important moments in the book because she acknowledges that all of this happened as a result of the hate someone gave and she will fight for a better system in the
