Hello, my name is Jennifer and my presentation will be on the book The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Out of the many topics explored in The Hate U Give, the topic of identity stood out to me the most. The concept of identity plays a crucial part in the development of many characters in this book, but most importantly, it is seen as an obstacle for Starr, the main character, to overcome.
From this topic, I developed the theme that due to societal pressures, the oppressed struggle to reveal their true identity. This theme is explored when Starr is opening up to Chris about her true self, she revealed that, “Being two different people is so exhausting. I’ve taught myself to speak with two different voices and only say certain things around certain people. I’ve mastered it ... Part of me feels like I can’t exist around people like him” (301). I used this drawing to represent how when people reveal their true selves, they are often prosecuted and judged by society for standing out. The imagery of cracked glass is to symbolize how someone's identity or perception of themself is fractured because of that person not knowing who they really are. I drew a grey figure covering up a person underneath to represent the idea of creating different personas to hide a person's true character, like what Starr did in an attempt to change herself to fit in with different people. The hands pointing and grabbing at the person, represent the pressures and judgement given by society towards the oppressed in an attempt to confine them, which results in that person hiding their identity.
