The Hero In Lauren Oliver's Before I Fall

Being a hero is something that comes naturally, not being a hero is something that over comes you until you don't realized you’ve changed. The novel Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver, is a young adult novel following Samantha Kingston who is a senior in high school. Sam and her friends Lindsay, Aly, and Elody, go to a party on Cupid Day and get into a car accident. Sam wakes up, and for the next seven days has to relive her last day over again, in attempt to stop Juliet Sykes, a shy girl who gets bullied, from killing herself, and showing up to a party they go to and telling off her friends. They all ended up staying at Aly’s partly because Sam thought avoiding the party would let her escape death. In the middle of the night Aly’s mother tells the girls that Juliet Sykes has short herself and died. All of the girls are shocked and are trying to come to a conclusion why Juliet would have done that when Lindsay said the most insensitive thing. “She’s better off this way,” Lindsay says. This is even low for her, and we all stare.”(Oliver 175). In this situation the reader can tell that Lindsay is feeling all of the guilt from torturing Juliet all of those years, and saying something like that shows the Lindsay feels like she is the one to blame. Feeling this way doesn’t take back anything of the things that Lindsay did and make them right. In her friend’s eyes at this moment she is a cruel, inconsiderate person. In the long run, Lindsay Edgecombe has the qualities of not being a hero in this novel. She has no regard for anyone else’s feelings, by doing so she makes herself seem superior to others. Her decision in life are what break her. She feels as if no one can stop her and she is above all consequences.
