The Hero Joseph Campbell had a vision that is different from what most individuals may think of when discussing a hero/heroine. Throughout history there have been numerous stories that tell of a hero or heroine. When Joseph Campbell was asked the reason, we see so many stories of heroes and heroines, his explanation was simple. That’s what is worth writing about. He mentioned that heroes are the ones that have done or achieved something that is out of the ordinary range of everyday human being experience. The easiest way to explain it is someone that has given their lives to something bigger than themselves. When he mentions that it is worth writing about, it is a way to encourage others to push themselves to something that is difficult, but attainable by any human in the entire world. All heroes have their own type of journey, but they all follow the same steps to become a hero in the eyes of Campbell. There are 12 steps that each hero may take. The intentional hero starts out their journey or quest with a specific goal in mind. A reluctant hero is one that undertakes a journey that they are forced into taking. This type of hero will eventually have to accept their quest to be considered a hero in Campbell’s eyes. The accidental hero falls between the intentional and reluctant hero. This type of hero falls into an unexpected journey. This hero also has to accept the journey that has been bestowed upon them for them to be considered a hero in Campbell’s mind. When Campbell was asked if heroes had a moral objective his response was the hero’s moral objective was the saving of a person, or of people. That the hero sacrificing himself is the morality of it.
