“As you grow into manhood, you must find your own truths.” This is the overall message Rudolfo Anaya conveys regarding a hero’s journey and myth in his Chicano novel Bless Me, Ultima. The protagonist of the novel, Antonio, is not the typical hero that readers expect to encounter in a novel; perhaps, this novel’s quest does not fit the typical mold since Antonio embarks on a quest of self discovery and spiritual enlightenment to new levels of understanding.
As noted, Antonio hears the call to adventure which comes in the form of Ultima who serves as a mentor and key factor to provide him with the tools necessary for his mysterious future path. Taking into consideration the novel Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya and the main role of Antonio as well as the slideshow, provides a connection and overview perception of heroes main purpose in a book. First of all, who is the hero? Heroes can be identified in many aspects and qualities depending on the culture setting it was given life. Also, the hero is the main character figuring out a series of conflicts and at the end gatherers ideas and makes his own conclusions. Why is the hero significant in the evolution of a literary work? The hero’s ability to maintain a firm position in society is inspirational to its readers and it directly correlates to the hero’s ability to be capable to uphold the standards established in society. The author Harrie provides readers reliable and objective information and states that the manner in which a given hero completes his assigned missions or tasks and succeeds in their journey largely influences their status and the readers cannot forget to evaluate heroes courageous soul based on the culture of their setting.
