In these two memoirs telling of struggles during the Holocaust that stole the lives of 6 million people not that long ago, the main characters Corrie from the book The Hiding Place and Eliezer from the book Night fight not only to stay alive but to also grasp onto their humanity. While reading both books share various similar themes but they also compare, especially when considering the main characters. During the book Night, the main character, Eliezer (Eli) is only 14, stays by himself, has a battle with his faith throughout the book, becoming angry with God for what was happening. Eliezer shows that while being held prisoner, in constant fear, fights to continue to grasp onto his humanity after witnessing atrocious situations taking place while trying to understand himself. Some differences in the main character's are how Corrie at the time of her first capture was 50 while Eliezer was at the youthful age of 14, because of the age difference they often viewed similar situations in such different versions. while both characters grew up in extremely religious households with wonderful parents that often cared for others above the needs for themselves, when they're strength in their faith, Corrie kept belief while Eliezer did not. Corrie and Elie also had different view of situations this is shown when the characters, eliezer’s father and bestie,Corrie’s old sister who is extremely religious and sees only the best in all passes, corrie is able to recognize that with her death she was finally “ at home”.
