How Do Stories Teach Us About Other Cultures Or Our Own? From the selection of stories, I chose Guan Nian and The Highwayman. Both stories teach us about techniques, quotes, values and attitudes. The values and attitudes in The Highwayman are Love, sacrifice, loyalty and that jealousy in not acceptable. The Values and Attitudes in Guan Nian are That teamwork is the key to success and Individual people doing things is harder than working together. The first story I chose was Guan Nian. Guan Nian was a legendary Chinese story that shows how people came together and defeated him. In Guan Nian the values and attitudes describes that individuals are weak when they work alone as it says in the story that “In the past people tried to stand up against him but they failed”. The villagers said “Life was good” which describes that the villagers spoke too soon as when the gods imprisoned Nian he broke out and terrorised the village once again. As the dragon broke out they had to work together because teamwork always equal to success. So, they painted all their walls red and made loud noises because they knew he was scared of bright colours and loud noises which all happened in the quote that says “Nian was shocked by the colours and noise everywhere. …show more content…

Guan Nian and The Highwayman both can teach people very different cultures and techniques which both reflect on their ways of life. In the Highwayman one of the morals of the story was not to be jealous. This is shown in the story by a man being jealous of another man so he tried to get rid of him and in Guan Nian, one of the morals is to work together. This is shown in the story by the villagers helping each other to rid the dragon of its presence, because they were working together they scared him off into the forest for ever. Therefore, stories can teach us about other cultures and our
