In the book a few days after Jeannette had begun school Mexican girls had followed her home and jumped her. Their reason being because Jeannette was proven to be more intelligent than them and was a “teacher’s pet”. While she was jumped the Mexican girls pulled her hair, teared her clothes, and verbally bullied her during the process. After that event she went home with scraped knees and elbows and a cut lip. When she talked with her father she lied to him by saying she battled more girls than the amount she really fought and acted tough to impress her father.
America is a “land of living hope, woven of dreams, aflame with longing and desire” people who come to America come here to get a better life or career. Most people who come to America for a few years think they are Americans because they wave a flag, but they don't know the true meaning of what it means to be and American. An American is someone who will die for it’s country, someone who emigrated here for more opportunities, and someone who is encouraged by the history of America. The two stories illustrate that African-Americans are not given an equal chance in terms of gaining opportunities for a successful life. However, it may be possible that one key factor among all can develop a whole problematic image on success and why White Americans think of the African-American society as to not having the capability for a chance towards success. At the time, the economy could have been at a huge disadvantage for the African-Americans because majority of them did not have the chance to rise up from it in terms of creating revenue for themselves. The poem “From this Height” by Tony Hoagland explores the ideas of the power of wealth, individual versus society, and the circle of life. The speaker, a very wealthy man, uses his money to support his opulent lifestyle. His wealth gives him a very affluent place in society and access to many things a middle class man would only dream of. The speaker struggles with the fact that society played a huge role in his success, yet most people do not get to life the way that he does. The idea of the “circle of life” gives the speaker a reason to justify the way he uses his money and lives his life, because he realizes “it would be a sin not to enjoy” all that he has been blessed with.

What does it mean to be an American: The land of the free and the home of the brave? Due to the diversity that America offers, the people regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, cultures, backgrounds and sexual orientation have an equal opportunity for a better life in America. In Anna Quindlen’s “A Quilt of a Country,” she explains how people view America. She writes that being an American is an idea that works despite that fact that it should not due to the diversity that exist in the country. Quindlen informs the reader that America was uniquely constructed on no precise culture or race.
What does it mean to be American? On the surface, the question of ‘what it means to be an American’ would normally invoke an emotional response of patriotism, freedom, and the opportunity to live one’s dreams. While this is true for me in the larger context, however, ‘what it means to be an American’ is deeper and has a more visceral meaning to me. The American person has no true ideals, or beliefs that make him or her up. Americans are free to believe in what they want, think what they want, preach what they want, and most importantly say what they want . Authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Frederick Douglass, and Walt Whitman show in their texts such as “Self-Reliance” , The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass , and “I Celebrate Myself” that there is no true definition of the American identity. The American identity can be seen in the many aspects of peoples lives, and a a quality that many Americans portray is the ability to have individual thoughts and emotions as well as the capability to not conform to society because they stand up for their own individual rights. The definition of being an American is often synonymous to most people. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, once expressed his vision, saying, "My dream is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as a beacon of hope." According to Lincoln, being American means embodying hope for a brighter future. Similarly, in Learned Hand's address titled "I am an American Day Address," he defines being American as having a sense of liberty. Understanding Hand's concept of liberty lies in recognizing the balance between courage and freedom.
However, I have come to terms with the fact that all I have is my story and even though it may not be the saddest or dramatic, what is important is, it is my own and I know how difficult it has been for me to overcome the obstacles in my life. The definition of American doesn't exist, because how can we define a people without a culture? It's impossible. It doesn’t matter if someone else believes you are incapable or if they think you are inadequate because of the color of your skin or where you are from. If you live in America, if you truly believe that you want to live by the laws and focus on the betterment of this nation, then nobody else’s opinion is relevant. Because to be an American is to focus on the betterment of this nation and to put our strong, independent minds together in order to create a better America.

Kennedy. While their opinions may be similar, they also differ and vary. However, both of their literary works prove the points trying to be made.
Attending school opened a new world for me. I had immigrated from Colombia eight years ago, and as an immigrant I faced several hurdles, such as the language barrier, the customs, the disadvantages of living in poverty, and the legalization in this nation. As the years began to go by, all the hindrances began to vanish itself, it was more a matter of time and perseverance. When my senior year of high school arrived, I was very excited to apply to all the colleges of my choice, nonetheless, from the twenty-five that I applied to, none accepted me.
