“Wilsonianism” is an ideology on foreign policy that aims to make the world a better place and create world peace. Walter LaFeber describes it as, “Making the world safe for democracy, free trade, and capitalism.” Throughout much of history this has been a goal for the United States of America. In fact, this premise produced the historiographical perspective of the Domestic is Foreign and Vice Versa. Four documents specifically relate to how “Wilsonianism” produced the perspective of the Domestic is Foreign and Vice Versa, Wilsons Fourteen Points, the Atlantic Charter, the Truman Doctrine, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. World War I had many causes, but in summary the war broke out because of the ideals of militarism, the use of alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. Every country had views of becoming a world power, which helped the war escalate to the point it reached. After the war President Wilson constructed his Fourteen Points to try stop a war like this from ever breaking out again. Wilsons Fourteen Points were designed to abolish secret treaties, reduce armaments, modify colonial claims, create freedom of navigation of the seas. The Atlantic Charter set out a vision for the post World War II world. It is one of the first key steps for the establishment of the United Nations. The common principles the document stated were aimed to create world peace. These principles were to not seek territorial gains, opposed territorial changes, supported restoration of self-government, gave countries the right to choose their government, gave access to raw materials for all nations, eased trade restrictions, secured improved living and working standards, and create freedom of the seas.
