Mr. Cathy and his brother Ben started their first business in 1946, when they opened an Atlanta diner known as The Dwarf Grill. They worked together and used their mothers recipe; all siblings helped in the cleaning and functioning of the diner.
By thus; all families working together, they raised their children and as they grew old enough to help out in the family business they were brought in to help. From cooking, to restocking, to picking up litter, from scraping gum in the parking lot and to cleaning restrooms.
In 1964, after trying all different recipes, Mr. Cathy creates the recipe for the original chicken sandwich with two pickles on a toasted bun. And it was until then, in 1967, Truett Cathy opened up his first Chick Fil A in Atlanta,

The first free-standing restaurant, Chick-fil-A North Druid Hills, opened in 1986 in Atlanta. Today, free-standing locations make up the majority of Chick-fil-A restaurants.
