The Lord of the Rings is an amazing fantasy story written by the British author J. R. R. Tolkien; his most popular work and a sequel to his novel, The Hobbit. Tolkien finished writing and published The Lord of the Rings in three volumes in 1954 and 1955. The three volumes consist of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. The Lord of the Rings describes the adventures of the characters in Middle Earth, a fictional world that contains many different creatures and a complete language created by Tolkien. “Tolkien used an Elvish language (Sindarin) for The Lord of the Rings that was entirely independent from any other language, and as of 2008 contained some 25,000 words” (30 Awesome). Although The Lord of the Rings books and movies have many similar characteristics, the books have more details compared to the movies. According to some people, The Lord of the Rings has some characteristics of an epic story of the past, such as The Odyssey of Homer or Beowulf. The first book of the trilogy, known as The Fellowship of the Ring, focuses on the establishment of the fellowship, and the beginning of the fellowship’s journey to Mordor to destroy the Ring of Power. It began with Bilbo Baggins celebrating his 111th birthday; after his speech he disappeared and started his journey to Rivendell (the home of the Elves). Before Bilbo left, he gave all of his possessions to Frodo including his ring. Gandalf put Bilbo’s ring into an envelope and told Frodo to keep it secret. In the book, Gandalf left for 17 years to try to figure out if the ring was the Master Ring; however, in the movie Gandalf appeared to be gone for only a short time. Once Gandalf returned, he knew that Bilbo possessed the Ring of Power. Gandalf warned Frodo that he should leave the Shire and keep the ring safe. Accompanied by three Hobbit friends, Pippin, Merry, and Sam, they set off to Bree to meet Gandalf; however, he
