The Hobbit is a fantasy book written by J. R. R. Tolkien. It is one of Tolkien's more popular books and the prequel to his Lord of the Rings. The story takes place in a fictional world called Middle Earth. Middle Earth has no modern technology and more like what you would see in a story about knights and castles. Many different creatures of Tolkien's imagination exist in this world including hobbits, after which this book was named. The story follows the adventures' of a particular hobbit named Bilbo Haggins. Like most other hobbits in this story, Bilbo lives a comfortable life with many luxuries and plenty of food. Bilbo doesn't like anything out of the ordinary that would mess up his daily routine. One day an old wizard named Gandalf shows up at Bilbo's door. Gandalf persuades Bilbo to go on an adventure with a group of thirteen dwarves. The dwarves are on a quest to take back their home and treasure. Years ago, a dragon named Smaug attacked the mountain in which they lived. The dragon killed and chased the dwarves out. By getting help from eagles and a creature named Beom, the party makes it to the dark forest of Mirkwood. Unfortunately, Gandalf is not able to guide them through the forest because he has other business to attend to. Inside the forest, they get caught by giant spiders, run into some not very friendly elves, but eventually escape inside barrels floating down a river. The barrels take them to Lake Town, a human settlement right beside the mountain. Bilbo sneaks inside the mountain and meets the clever dragon Smaug. Smaug becomes enraged and leaves to bum Lake Town to the ground. An archer in Lake Town named Bard manages to defeat Smaug by shooting him in a weak spot.
