Movies and books are two of the most popular forms of modern media, past times, and storytelling, and as the years pass, these two distinct forms of media slowly merge together. As these media meld, book based movies try to imitate the fantasies of the book, such as The Hobbit. The Hobbit is the necessary prequel to the astounding Lord of the Rings series, so as book based movies began cropping up, it is unsurprising that The Lord of the Rings series and The Hobbit found several movies with their names. Specifically, The Hobbit gained three movies in its name, namely, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. This is best seen through the character Radagast. In the novel, Radagast is mentioned about once, when the wizard Gandalf says, “...perhaps you have heard of my good cousin Radagast who lives near the Southern borders of Mirkwood” (pg. 119). Radagast plays no major roles in the novel, yet the movie changes this completely. In the motion picture The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Radagast is not only a character in the movie with quotes and actions but is also involved in aiding the protagonists. Although critics generally frown upon characters and events not derived from the source material, the more important issue is that these clips rarely, if ever, advance the story nor the protagonists. In the movie, after minutes of exposition and introduction, Radagast abruptly appears from the forest and diverts the enemy party away from the protagonists to help them continue their quest. After this scene, your perception of the main characters stays alike previous perceptions and the plot doesn’t move far forward. This is also likely why events like these don’t occur in the book. This is probably due to stretching out the plot over the span of three movies, making each movie slower.
