The media has become a universal presence in our daily lives as it has the power to shape our perceptions and views. Through many platforms, ranging from television to the internet and social media, the media is constantly providing us with information. Many people rely on the media as it provides news updates on current events around the world. However, media coverage has had negative consequences as a large amount of the information provided is not all it seems to be. The media provides misleading context and images that do not accurately represent current events to attract and appeal to viewers. Both "The House in Time" and "Lucid Cameras" highlight the power of media coverage and its impact on our understanding of the world. While Carter's journal article focuses on the way media coverage twists the narrative, Sanon's journal article highlights how the media is used to manipulate public perception and obscure the truth. Both journal articles challenge us to consider the role of media in shaping our perceptions and beliefs and encourage us to be critical of the narratives being presented to us. Pressley-Sanon (2019) examines the effects of the media on Haitians in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. Through this work, Sanon demonstrates how the media distorts images of Haiti and the Haitians living there in order to shape a narrative that will appeal to their viewers. The Haitian people were exploited and only viewed as "stories" by the journalists, who used them for their own advantage. These two images had different captions, although they were essentially the same. One image shows a pair of white people walking with bags through the floodwater, with the caption describing how the two "found" food and other necessary essentials. The second photograph consisted of the same situation except for two people in the photograph, there was one black person with a caption saying that the man was one of the many "looters", "..similar depictions and descriptions of looting circulated, most famously in a news photograph of a Black person carrying some bags through flooded water, which was captioned as an example of 'looting.' The image stood in stark contrast to a photograph of two white people in the same circumstances—carrying bags through flooded water—whose caption describes the act of "finding" food and other essentials (Sommers et al. 2006)" (Carter 2019, 132).
