The House on Mango Street was written by Sandra Cisneros. The House on Mango Street is a Coming of age story about Esperanza. In The House on Mango Street Esperanza the protagonist is very similar to the author Sandra Cisneros. Like Cisneros Esperanza grew up in a Chicago Barrio. The Spanish word Barrio means the Spanish-speaking quarter of a town or city, especially one with a high poverty level (Barrio). Cisneros is a pioneer in Chicana literature. She was the first Latina woman to get a major contract for a book about Chicanas (1). She published The House on Mango Street, her first book, in 1984. Cisneros received her bachelors from Loyola University, then finished her Master’s degree in literature at the University of Iowa in 1978. Cisneros attempted to start her own writing workshops and did not succeed. She then went on to work in multiple universities including California State University starting in 1987.
