The House on Mango Street is a coming-of-age novel by Mexican-American writer Sandra Cisneros. It deals with a young Latina girl, Esperanza Cordero and her life. She grows up in Chicago with Chicanos and Puerto Ricans. It is a 1984 coming of age novel. The novel has become a New York Times Bestseller and also been adapted into a stage play by Tanya Saracho. The story begins with the protagonist, Esperanza, narrating how her family gets there at the house on Mango Street. The family moved around a lot before they settled in their new house. The reader grows a sense of Esperanza’s descriptive and observant nature as she begins the novel by describing the minute observations and behaviours about her family members.
