Amid one of the one of the greatest civil rights movements the world has ever seen, the illustrious Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education” (Strauss). These bold words radiate with truth and effectively demonstrate the importance of a course similar to The Human Event. This class allows students to engage deeply with various historic texts, contemplate their significance, and analyze their meaning through collegiate discussion and argumentative writing. A course like The Human Event provides a scholarly environment where it is possible to pursue a “true education” and, I argue, should be required for all first-year ASU students. Dr. King argued that the goal of a true education is to teach one to think critically. This goal is accomplished through the structure, coursework, and environment present in The Human Event. A course such as this one is a source of collegiality; an atmosphere where students are able to collaborate, share ideas, and further one another’s understanding. This class not only encourages frequent discussion, but implements into the daily routine, allowing students to speak, listen, and learn. The Human Event promotes discussion, providing students with the opportunity to cultivate their own ideas into words and communicate these original interpretations clearly and effectively. This opportunity doesn’t just benefit the speaker, but also the listeners. When new ideas are shared, the group as a whole can advance their understanding. This kind of collegiate and intellectual environment truly creates an education composed of intelligence and
