The Human Genome Project Is Important In World History

1357 Words6 Pages

The Human Genome Project is, “An international scientific research project with the goal of determining the sequence of chemical base pairs which make up human DNA, and of identifying and mapping all of the genes of the human genome from both a physical and a functional standpoint.” People say this project is still the world’s most collaborative biological project. This project will forever be important in world history for a lot of reasons. Like how it helped and still helps to solve medical mysteries, find a cure for many deceases and brought the world together to try to get the whole project done in a fast and timely matter. It also brought a lot more knowledge to scientists so they can discover more things because they have this …show more content…

But, they didn’t stop there; they also started studying other organism’s genome too. It said in the article, “By studying the similarities and differences between the human genome and other organism’s genome, researchers can discover the functions of particular genes and identify which genes are critical for life.” They also put all new information they found on the internet, so that other scientists all over the world could contribute to the project and maybe they could get the project done faster than what they thought it could be completed by previously. Which they did complete the project two years ahead schedule and also under budget. This project laid the foundation to more discoveries in the future that couldn’t have been possible without The Human Genome …show more content…

Like, a number of genome sequencing projects have been set up since the Human Genome Project, to start to understand genome biology. Another thing is The International HapMat Project, which is a project trying to find cures for diseases such as, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, asthma, etc. Also some scientist launched the research project named ENCODE, which is, “A project aimed to identify and characterize all the functional parts of the genome, and so begin to reveal how the genome actually works.” There is a lot more projects and things that have occurred because of The Human Genome Project but those are some main things that have occurred because of the
