Antithesis and Theme Victor Hugo brings out the concept of antithesis in his novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame.. The theme in this novel is something everyone needs to remember. Never judge a book by its cover. The characters seem to forget this sometimes. Quasimodo is a main character in this novel. He is very nice and caring. He does not have the best life and he tries to make the best of it. People in the town call him the devil. They do not give him a chance to prove himself. Quasimodo was not born with great looks at all. Quasimodo is a very nice guy on the inside. No one gave him a chance. If it was not for Claude Frollo, the priest, no one would have adopted him. He never had anything good said about him because of his ugly body. He had learned to deal with the pain of being made fun of. Phoebus de Chateaupers is the head of the King’s Archers. He has a beautiful body and everyone gets fooled by it. “Placing her hands on his shoulders, she looked at him intently for a few moments, as it delighted with his handsome face as well as the way he had come to her rescue” (Hugo 37). Esmeralda does not look at Phoebus’ personality and his goals. All she looks at is his good looks and how he rescued her. Quasimodo saved Esmeralda, too, He does not get the same reaction. . She soon falls in love with Phoebus. He is the definition of what today’s world calls a “player”. Phoebus wants one thing for the women he talks too.
