In a futuristic society called Panem, twelve districts exist in a world where once a year, 24 children fight to the death as a punishment for the war their districts caused against the nation's Capitol. Unfortunately, only one child comes out alive. The majority of the book is focused around District 12 where Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark come from. ( Spoiler alert: they both go into the 74th annual Hunger Games and they both come out alive.) Katniss becomes the face of the rebellion that eventually takes place to stop the games once and for all and throughout the trilogy, readers learn about the difficulty in doing so and they also get a view on the incredible love story that takes place. The author behind the phenomenon is a woman named Suzanne Collins. Collins lived in a military family growing up and was constantly moving around the world. Her dad was a very passionate officer in The United States Air Force and he felt that it was necessary to educate his children about popular war sights and the history behind them. Collins also had a huge love for theater and literature and she ended up majoring in theater and telecommunications, then eventually earned her master’s degree in dramatic writing. As mentioned before, the whole novel is about a war that led the Capitol to punish their districts by forcing 2 children from each one to fight to death in an arena. The whole idea behind the games come from the Greek story of Theseus and the Minotaur. According to the legend, King Minos ordered that seven boys and seven girls be placed in a labyrinth where they would become prey to the Minotaur. Through their obedience, there was hope for survival. Theseus was one of the children sent to the labyrinth and he managed to kill the Minotaur.
