“The Symbolism in The Hunger Games” A symbol is more than a passing comparison. Symbolism can represent a number of many different things. Symbolism can represent something that resembles or is closely related to what it represents (285). In the novel The Hunger games the setting takes place in Panem which was once North America. Panema is made up of thirteen colonies with the capitol sitting in the middle of Panem controlling, making the rules and in charge of hosting the yearly hunger games. One can see how this set up could closely symbolize to back in history during the colonial period when North America was also split into thirteen colonies. In the capitol, food is everywhere at the push of a button. The constant availability of food is mind-boggling to someone like Katniss. “What must it be like, I wonder, to live in a world where food appears at the press of a button? How would I spend the hours I now commit to combing the woods for sustenance if it were so easy to come by?” (5.27) Katniss also states that food in the poorer districts more scarce, and starvation is a serious threat. Unlike Katniss’s district 12 were the residents wear only bland colors of grey, the capital occupants wear a wide variety of vibrant colors. The use of colors in their wardrobe lets the reader know that the more wealthy have the luxury of expressing themselves through their outfits. Symbolism plays a very important role from just representing something, to a meaning of something or being an arbitrary symbol. Through the novel The Hunger games there are many different types of symbolism showed. In my opinion the book would make no sense or have no emotional meaning without the symbolism to Americas past time, to the mocking jay and the desire to freedom.
