In the book and film The Ice Storm, by Rick Moody and Ang Lee, respectively; we come across the character of Elena Hood. Elena is the wife of Benjamin Hood and mother of Paul and Wendy Hood. Through the two mediums of The Ice Storm, book and film, we are provided with two versions of one character. Because adapting a novel into a film is easier said than done, directors occasionally lose the essence of a character on film that made the same character great in the book. In the novel The Ice Storm, by Rick Moody, Elena Hood is a quiet character. Due to the emotional abuse she received in her childhood, Elena is unable to shown any affection towards herself or her family. She delivers a cold and unmotherly vibe towards her children whom never expect anything out of their mother. Elena prefers to stay in solitude and does not get involved with her children unless it’s to call them down for dinner. Elena’s relationship with her husband is dissipating quickly. The two have not been close, physically and emotionally, for a very long time. All the while, Elena feels multiple emotions, but is not able to convey them out loud.

Although, that’s not always necessarily a terrible thing. Ang Lee’s portray of Elena Hood is more appealing to viewers, while Moody’s Elena Hood is relatable to some people, she isn’t very much a likable character. However, not all films lose the character’s entire spirit. For instance, in the film The Ice Storm, Ang Lee manages to capture Elena’s distantness and emotionlessness, all while still making her feel like a mother. Ang Lee leads to show that you can still manage to change character into a likeable one while still keeping the original authors spirit of the
