Ever wondered how a person can change so much in what seems like almost an instant? One day they are this person, and then the next day that person’s personality is practically unrecognizable. It is like a situation comes up in front of them and now “the true them” is exposed for everyone to see. There are many pieces of entertainment that portray or display this type of behavior. One of those is a movie created in the mid 1990s called “Set It Off.” The movie revolves around a group of hard-working women in their 20s. Financially, they are not in the best situation, and like stated above, these women crack under pressure and do something unpredictable to the people that know them. Like stated in the first paragraph, the movie Set It Off is a good example of the concept of ghettocentric imagination. A group of women goes against the concept of making an honest and humble living of oneself by working a job very hard and settling with the money you earn. This structure was what the main characters were following in the beginning of the movie, but eventually they crack under the pressure of feeling like they were treated badly, almost inhumane. Frankie, a bank teller, is fired after the bank was robbed, for not following a protocol of a robbery, although that protocol could of potentially got her killed. This movie is very similar to the movie Set It Off because it follows the same formula of a person going through so much in their lives and resorts to doing the unthinkable, in pursuit of living a better life. The main character in Menace II Society, Caine, is an 18 year old boy who is in a similar situation as the 4 girls in the movie Set It Off, young and troubled who just wants to change his life by any means. The 4 girls plus Caine would be a strong team. In Caine’s case, his father was a drug dealer that was killed when Caine was a little kid and his mother was a drug addict, which greatly influenced Caine’s life of crime that the audience is introduced to. This does differ from the beginning of Set It Off, since the 4 girls started off making an honest living for themselves before resorting to crime, while Caine was born in this unfortunate situation. The way the movie Menace II Society is equally as tragic as the ending to Set It Off, with the main characters new way of life ultimately leading to their death right before they call it quits in the dangerous lifestyle they were practicing. In the ending of Set It Off, 3 of the 4 women are shot down by the police from a bank robbery gone wrong. The 4th woman escapes by getting on a bus last second. This bank robbery was going to be their last one they do before they move far away and start a new like with this new
