Everybody's personality and identity is influenced by their culture and what they experienced while growing up. An example of this is the character Katniss Everdeen from the popular book series and movies The Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen is a character whose cultural background plays a large role in the shaping of her identity. For example, growing up in poverty struck district 12 that had an oppressive and dangerous environment caused her to become very resourceful, selfless, and independent.
Since Katniss and her family didn't have a lot of money she would often have to be very resourceful in not only how she spent money, but also how she would obtain money, food, and clothes. An example of this is that she would use her bow and arrow to …show more content…

One of the first major events in the story is the reaping, which is where the people who would be competing in the hunger games are chosen. During the reaping Katniss' sister Prim got chosen and because of how much she cared about her sister she immediately volunteered for the game saving her sister from what would've most likely killed her. This example really showed how selfless Katniss was because many people say they would do the same thing in that situation but in reality lots of people wouldn't have made that split second decision, especially since going to the hunger games almost always leads to death. One other example of Katniss being selfless is during the hunger games where she risked her life to get Peeta medicine. After Katniss found Peeta lying down injured she knew he was going to require medicine to survive a sword injury on his thigh. Luckily there was an announcement that there was a care package for each team, containing something they desperately needed. In this difficult situation she ignored Peeta’s warnings that getting the medicine would be too dangerous and risked her life to get it. This act showed that since Katniss lived where people were often in difficult and dangerous situations she would be very selfless and put others and their lives before her
