Odysseus and Ulysses had to be leaders to their men. They endured through some hard times together, and when everyone wanted to give up, Ulysses and Odysseus had to keep their men’s heads up. They had to say these things to their men to keep them positive and moving through all of the horrible times when they thought nothing would ever get better. The tone is something that occurs all throughout both stories, whether it be sad, scared, or excited depending on the
“Ulysses has at last indeed come home again, and has killed the suitors who were giving so much trouble in his house, eating up his estate and ill-treating his son." (Book XXIII par 1). Odysseus showed no mercy to the suitors, and his servant that he thought betrayed him. He was expecting to come home, so that he could be reunited with his family, and be at peace. Instead he had to regain power over his own home from suitors who was trying to get with his wife and mistreating his son.
He is disillusioned by the hustle and bustle of the city and hopes to find what he’s missing in life. The reason he becomes so invested in Gatsby’s quest for love is that he’s looking for the same thing as him, only in a different way. He later realizes the superficiality of his new lifestyle and feels alienated from his wealthier counterparts. This can be seen when he says, "Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction—Gatsby who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn." (Fitzgerald
Sundiata and The Odyssey are two out of the many great great orally told tales in all of mankind history. In writing, comparing your work to another similar text is extremely important for making your paper understandable to any audience. In this case, I will be comparing the two similar texts, The Odyssey and Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali. Both of these two tables show the characters, Sundiata and Odysseus, long quests of pursuing and accomplishing a certain objective. To reach their goal, both characters encounter obstacles and enemies who want to stop them on their prolonged journey.
However, as he still cannot win Daisy’s love after obtaining a fortune, Gatsby feels an overwhelming sense of urgency. In the end, forcing Daisy to choose between Tom and himself causes Gatsby to drift further away from her and prevents him from being with Daisy again. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald proposes that when individuals are placed in situations where their dreams feel difficult to obtain, they may need patience and time to achieve their goals. Those having difficulty reaching their objectives may eventually become agitated and act recklessly out of a sense of urgency to fulfill their dreams. As a result, rushing and failing to recognize that patience may be required to achieve their goals may ultimately reduce their likelihood of success even further.
Ulysses finally after ten years of storm, shipwreck, and sorceries arrived in Ithaca, his home. Ulysses found his old good friend Eumaeus and he pretended to be an old begger so he could gather information on what was his status on the island after all the years he had been gone. Ulysses continued to pretend to be an old beggar, but when he saw his son, Telemachus he told him that he was his father, Ulysses. Ulysses, Telemachus, and Eumaeus headed to the castle where laid Penelope's suitors who wished for her hand in marriage. They came up with a plan to defeat all the suitors.
Calypso provided Ulysses a small vessel, which was more than what the gods had ordered. Ulysses sailed for seventeen days trying to find his way back home, until Poseidon noticed his vessel on his way back from Africa. Poseidon got angry at the fact that Ulysses was still alive so he had created a storm with waves that would destroy Ulysses ship and drown him. Ulysses struggled trying to keep himself alive until a nereid named Ino saw what was happening and came to Ulysses rescue for she dislike Poseidon. Ino gave Ulysses a veil and told him it would prevent him from drowning.
Since the beginning of war veterans, heroes and warriors were compensated with the most prominent fortune there is, yet these days veterans are treated with less and less regard. Articles Psychiatrist Who Counsels Vet Wins Genius Grant by Joseph Shapiro and Back From War, but not really home by Caroline Alexander writes on how veterans today are getting help to no help at all from what they have experienced during the war. Each was composed about how the ancient epic poems are improving veterans to become better from their traumatic encounters. By reading the ancient epic poems The ILiad and The Odyssey gives comfort to modern combat veterans by giving veterans a method to relate the struggle of other veterans when in combat.
Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby try to find happiness, none of them do. This is because true happiness can only be found in looking towards the future. For Gatsby, being caught in the past prevents him from moving on. With his immense wealth he potentially could have anything and do anything he wanted. If Gatsby would have looked to the future he would have known that the relationship with Daisy was not going to last and that she was never going to leave Tom.
Ever since he lost Daisy to the war, Gatsby never recovered that idea. Because of this, Gatsby finds himself lost and confused. Fitzgerald is explaining that happiness has the tendency to be temporary and unrecoverable. Even someone with extreme wealth such as Gatsby, will never find happiness.
Due to Claudius’ power as the king of Denmark and Hamlet’s position as the heir to the throne, Hamlet cannot attack Claudius “It is not nor it cannot come to good but break my heart for I must hold my tongue”(1. 2. 50-55) until he is certain that Claudius is guilty of the murder. Hamlet is cautious as he knows that if he kills Claudius and it turns out that he was innocent Hamlet will have committed a crime against God and against Denmark and he will have deprived his mother of the man she
This is not the homecoming he had imagined all those years, picturing Ithaca as he remembered it, not thinking of the changes of the times. Nostalgia is that of longing for the past, and in Odysseus’s case, the past is all he knows. He did not return to the past lands of Ithaca, and so he is not truly home simply by setting foot on the island
Another thing he had looked forward to was getting home to his wife, Penelope. Now that he sees her he realizes he has changed a lot since he last saw her, twenty years ago. Now her youthful beauty has been replaced by aged ugliness. In the second stanza, Ulysses recounts his life of “… Drinking / Life to the lees…” (6-7).
In the entire poem, it mentioned Ulysses longing to go away and adventure. His longing occurred because he was curious about the world and to satisfy that curiosity, he desired to travel to answer his questions. His curiosity about the things around him and the world allowed for him to adventure and his will to continue wondering. Differently, Odysseus’s curiosity sometimes caused trouble for him. Odysseus was curious about various things going on around him at his obstacles, which lead to trouble for him sometimes.
Iliad, the epic poem is written by a great epic poet Homer. This poem is a classic in real terms and recounts some historic facts about the last ten years of Trojan war and the Greek siege city of Troy. Tracing back its history, Iliad is thought to be written back in 8th century B.C. and it is considered one of the earliest works in western literary tradition. It captures the scene of blood, abductions, murders, wrath of Achilles, revenge, anger and intervention of gods. The scene of warfare and blood are presented in the poem through oral tradition initially.
